What is your inspiration for this sketch?
Inspired by Sophie Amoruso and the Nasty Gal story, I want to bring forth what the Nasty Gal DNA means to me. Having shopped with the site for many years, and being made to feel that my own unique style is something to be celebrated, I decided to create a design for a bag that could be worn many different ways, to fit with all the different outfits, styles and things we have to do in our busy lives. I sketched in the style of the illustrations from Sophia's #Girlboss book, as I think they really convey the feminine power that we all have within us. With a little hard work and determination, we CAN achieve our dreams. This bag is one to support ambition.
Why did you select these particular materials to work for your sketch?
I have been doing a lot of research recently on how to make a bag that carries everything we need for work lighter. We carry so much (tech, books, make-up, and more!) with us that we need to save our poor backs! I chose lightweight textured leather, lightweight lining and less hardware to answer this problem.
What is your design background?
I studied 3D design at University and have since studied handbag design at the London College of Fashion. I have worked in millinery and furniture design in the past. I've been designing for my own label for almost two years.
Do you currently design your own handbags collection? If so, would your Nasty Gal design fit into your current line?
This design fits in perfectly with my brand, Jennifer Hamley. I design handbags for working women. I noticed that as the trend is moving away from working in permanent offices, and becoming more location independent, we need handbags that carry everything we need. Its important to have organization so that everything we need is at our fingertips, and also to make handbags that aren't too big. We need to carry just what we need so that we don't injure ourselves. Of course, the handbags for work need to be beautiful, so I select the finest materials and custom fittings and lining.
What materials do you normally work with?
Leather - although I am researching vegan alternatives too.
What can you offer to the Nasty Gal aesthetic?
This design that offers different options on how to wear, is modern and unusual and supports modern life. It celebrates that we are all different and have a different sense of style. Just like Nasty Gal!
