Elif Akaydin - Patent of Heart

Finalist of the The Trickle Up Most Socially Responsible Handbag

2017 Finalist Elif Akaydin Patent of Heart

What country are your bags manufactured?

Please explain how your bags are socially responsible?
I personally believe the power of giving back to society as a way to create balance, harmony and peace in the world. Having a mission with a strong social component truly motivates us and adds greater meaning to what we do. I am always inspired by strong, self-confident and independent women in society, just like my late grandmother. She raised and taught me that education is the key to self-awareness and confidence. I believe that providing proper education is the ultimate gift to girls around the world that results in a better, brighter and more peaceful future. The positive impact of girl's education has been shown to transcend generations delivering better health outcomes among women, their children, and eventually their grandchildren. More than half of the 67 million children not in school today are girls. With this in mind, on behalf of the whole team behind "Patent of Heart," we sincerely open and extend our hearts to the young girls in less-privileged areas around the world to support their education through a corporate social responsibility program. We pledge to donate a portion of our profit every season to foundations around the world providing education to girls. We will target organizations which create awareness to this important cause and that can help change the destiny of generations.

Do you work with local/native artisans to design your bags?
Yes. My quest was to bring to life an original, artistic and artisanal collection that has an intrinsic value in itself, projecting quality, beauty, art, elegance and most importantly, artisanship. Therefore, aside from using materials of the highest quality throughout the production, what lies in the heart of this new line is its "chain-stitched hand-embroidery" technique which is mostly performed by artisan women in India. Every single bag in this collection was hand-made by these wonderful and talented women artisans in India meticulously applying this technique on our bags.

Working Conditions. (Are the manufacturers/artisans that are being employed being treated humanely, of age, and working in safe and acceptable conditions? Please explain)
Yes. We work with eco friendly manufacturers.

Why did you choose this country to have your bags made and what made you decided to give back?
I am from Turkey originally, and I have always felt very lucky to be born into a family that values women's education unlike many other families. I feel responsible to raise awareness for girls education in Turkey and provide work for them. Even if I can change one girls life I believe I can make a difference .
