Amy Steele - Amy Steele

Winner of the The Cutting Edge Bag by Nasty Gal

2017 Finalist Amy Steele Amy Steele

What is your inspiration for this sketch?
I wanted to create a bag that was both on-trend and captured the vintage aesthetic that influences Nasty Gal. I decided to design something that would align with the festival-ready segment - a bag with a 1960s vibe. The rose embroidery pattern was adapted from a vintage embroidered collar and I incorporated a knotted fringe along the front seam. The belt bag silhouette is also both popular right now and perfectly suited for festival fashion collection.

Why did you select these particular materials to work for your sketch?
I chose to use 3 oz leather because it is both durable and lightweight.

What is your design background?
I left a career in finance to start Amy Steele Bags in 2006. Since then, I design and manufacture handbags and leather goods in my studio in North Bay, Canada.

Do you currently design your own handbags collection? If so, would your Nasty Gal design fit into your current line?
This bag is quite different from my own collection but I think that my customers would love it.

What materials do you normally work with?
I work almost exclusively in leather.

What can you offer to the Nasty Gal aesthetic?
I can offer my long history of design experience and my ability to marry form, function, and fashion.
