Aditi Dhar - VITASTA

Finalist of the The BERNINA Best Handmade Handbag

2017 Finalist Aditi Dhar VITASTA

How are your bags made?
The punched saddlebag is a handmade and machine stitched handbag. This particular style requires very little stitching as the parts are assembled by hand and then stitched during final assembly. The bag is made in a double bonded contrast leather combo. the leather components are hand-cut using a pattern and then the parts are carefully constructed and assembled. The punchwork is done by hand. The final body, side and flap assembly requires a flat bed heavy duty stitching machine.

What is the primary material used?
Tumbled calf leather and a calf suede inner

Do you make all of your own bags? If not, please explain who helps you make your bags.
I work in my studio with 2 other craftsmen. The leather components are cut by me, and are handed over to the craftsmen along with the other relevant materials. The craftsmen assemble the bags. All final inspection, finishing and packing is done by me.

What is your design inspiration?
The craft and colors of nomadic tribes of Western India are my inspiration. There is simplicity in design and colour reflected in the punch-work detail and contrast leathers used. The palette is a bold red, contrasted with a earthy tan, very influenced by a windswept desert landscape. The silhouette is a Saddle bag, which is an everyday shape, with multiple pockets, adjustable straps, and minimal reinforcement, to keep it as functional as possible and very lightweight. All our bags are very lightweight!

What sewing machine do you use to make your bags? How long have you had it?
We use Highlead and brother. We had it for 3 years.

Have you ever sewn with or used an industrial sewing machine? If not, how do you sew with leather?
Yes, we work with industrial sewing machine to stitch all our leather bags.
