Finalist of the The Leather Suede Skins Best Handmade Handbag

2020 Finalist Aleksandra Klimek ALEXANDRA KLIMEK

Aleksandra Klimek FINALIST'S PROFILE

Have you ever sewn with or used an industrial sewing machine? If not, how do you sew with leather?
Products designed and made by me are not fast fashion items. The high quality and standard of craftsmanship make them exclusive and long lasting accessories. The bags I make are made of hand cut leather, with elements of sewing-machine stitching and hand stitching. They also incorporate hand tooled wood.

What sewing machine do you use to make your bags? How long have you had it?
Primary material used is leather - scotch grain leather, calf skin and lamb skin and oak wood.

What is your design inspiration? Are there Instagram accounts that you follow for inspiration?
Yes I make all of my bags by myself - that include designing, cutting patterns, crafting and sewing. Wooden pieces are cut on the CNC machine, although I polish and finish them off by myself.

Do you make all of your own bags? If not, please explain who helps you make your bags.
All accessories hand-crafted by Alexandra Klimek are designed to express an emotion and make the potential owner feel unique. Inspiration behind every product comes from that feeling of happiness while doing sports or simple physical activities (playing basketball, swimming), hence their rather geometric form. Products' silhouettes, colours and choice of material are also inspired by modern and vintage sport equipment, architecture and interior of sport venues. The uniqueness of the brand flows from the combination of shapes and materials employed(leather, wood) by combining modern design with leather craftsmanship. Instagram accounts that I follow for inspiration are : @ratedmodernart, @petraleary, @bicicletasemfreio, @marktennantart, @thekunstmagazine, @accidentallywesanderson, @nasa, @remirough, @jankalab, @parklife.co.nz, @cocolia, @petraleary

What is the primary material used?
I use ADLER industrial sewing machines. The machinery I use at my current workshop has been used by me for over two years but belongs to the workshop owner.

How are your bags made?
Yes I have used various types of industrial machines (cylinder arm, flatbed and post machine). I also hand stitch some parts of my products.
