Mila De Campos FINALIST'S PROFILE

What country are your bags manufactured?
Colombia

Please explain how your bags are socially responsible?
Our workshop in Colombia is located in a traditional working-class neighbourhood in the south-west of Bogota. Known for centuries for its tradition of leather goods and shoemaking, these lively streets make up one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. The family company that owns the workshop is our main partner for manufacturing our handbags. It was founded three years ago and its attention to quality and details has made this workshop of twenty people the ideal partner for the making of L'Autre Sac products. Our prime motivation for the choice of this partner is their close connection with the local community. Their great concern is to integrate people into the labor market who, if not for them, would probably not have the possibility to work. This is how women with physical disabilities or with a difficult past marked by marginalisation find an opportunity to learn a trade, integrate into the world of work and, of course, earn a living.

Do you work with local/native artisans to design your bags?
Yes, we brought in our expertise as a designers to teach them how to make our handbags. So that we are leaving to them our knowhow to use it for future projects. We come back every season from 2018 to make our bags there and it is very rewarding to see how do they evolve in the knowledge of doing bags and how the make a living with them.

Working Conditions. Are the manufacturers/artisans that are being employed being treated humanely, of age, and working in safe and acceptable conditions? Please explain.

Why did you choose this country to have your bags made and what made you decide to give back? How have your bags impacted this community?
The women's workshop that manufactures the fabric bags of L'Autre Sac that accompanies each of our bags is right in this neighbourhood. We are excited to participate in the development of this community of women, not only through their employment, but also through their girls education. With each sale a percentage of our profits goes to the grant. Each bag sold is equivalent to one day of studies for a girl. Our aim is that as L'Autre Sac grows, the grant will reach more and more girls. Who do we collaborate with? For almost 50 years now, the Ana Restrepo del Corral Foundation manages a high-standard school in a disadvantaged neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Bogota. In a neighbourhood with difficult economic and social conditions the school educates more than 650 children in primary, secondary and technical levels and provides free food and dental care to all its students.
