Yumiko Maki FINALIST'S PROFILE

How are your bags made?
Sewing machine and hand-sewn

What is the primary material used?
Leather and zipper

Do you make all of your own bags? If not, please explain who helps you make your bags.
Yes, I mostly make my bags by my own hands. I also work with people who have disabilities in Japan to make them feel comfortable, increase their independence in society, and create opportunities for meaningful tasks that they find enjoyable.

What is your design inspiration?
This time, I was inspired from Goshinboku, which means sacred tree in Japanese. When I had a chance to see it, I was impressed so much. I wondered how I could express this great spiritual power and vitality in my handbag design. I represented leaves and movement of tree trunk using zippers that is one of my design characteristics, and dewdrops using studs. I also picked the color red for the inside to show hidden passion. I would be very happy if people feel momentum through my handbag.

What sewing machine do you use to make your bags? How long have you had it?
I have had JUKI industrial sewing machine for 6 years.

Have you ever sewn with or used an industrial sewing machine? If not, how do you sew with leather?
Yes, I have worked with an industrial machine more than 10 years.
