Alexis Spaide FINALIST'S PROFILE

How are your bags made?
The backpack is made with a sewing machine, because of it's ability to lay flat, it was able to be sewn completely with the machine.

What is the primary material used?
Vegan leather

Do you make all of your own bags? If not, please explain who helps you make your bags.
Yes, I have made all of my own bags by hand or with a sewing machine.

What is your design inspiration?
The design inspiration came from my thesis collection which was centered around Global Warming. The backpack is inspired by characteristics of ice, due to the colors used as well as the rigid and geometric shapes and ice's evolving shape. The backpack is also made out of 1 pattern piece for the outer leather, and 1 pattern piece for the lining leather, so it is able to lay completely flat.

What sewing machine do you use to make your bags? How long have you had it?
Mauser. It is the university's sewing machine.

Have you ever sewn with or used an industrial sewing machine? If not, how do you sew with leather?
I have worked with a Mauser sewing machine and also know how to hand sew leather.
