Mary Lai FINALIST'S PROFILE

How are your bags made?
This bag is made with plush-back satin elastic used for lingerie. The straps are individually hand cut and sewn to create this design of lines using an industrial sewing machine. The body of the clutch consists of embossed string ray foil leather reinforced with bonded leather for structure. The flap is sewn to the body with a heavyweight cowhide with the design of strap lines that continues to the backside. The finishing touch is two coats of black edge paint to complete and polish off this chic all black ensemble.

What is the primary material used?
Cowhide Leather

Do you make all of your own bags? If not, please explain who helps you make your bags.
No, I only make samples. I have a sample maker in the Garment District that does my production.

What is your design inspiration?
The 'BBxML Stassi' clutch is inspired by our muse, Stassi Schroeder, from Bravo TV's Vanderpump Rules, and collaboration with couture bondage lingerie, Bodybinds. We developed a visual story with a photo shoot around her and this bag in New York. As a modern day fashion influencer we bring an element of Old Hollywood glamour to blend with the look of the provocative lingerie and our edgy handbags.

What sewing machine to you use to make your bags?
Consew
