Monica Frisbie FINALIST'S PROFILE

What country are your bags manufactured?
Peru

Please explain how your bags are socially responsible?
All of my bags are bench-made by artisans in Peru, but this hand beaded bag is a special project of mine working directly with a tribal community in the Peruvian amazon where it is a constant struggle to preserve native lifestyles and habitats. This bag was beaded by a community of tribal women who are supported by a peruvian organization of Flora Tristan. Flora Tristan makes it possible for these women to work in a non-stress environment empowering them to preserve ancient beading techniques and other tribal traditions so they are not lost. They are encouraged to maintain there traditions in there natural environments.

Do you work with local/native artisans to design your bags?
Yes

Why did you choose this country to have your bags made and what made you decided to give back?
I was always drawn to Peru, I remember doing a project in 6th grade about the Incas. I was fascinated by how each textile and weaving told a story and held a history. It gave meaning and depth to fashion to me. I would like to help preserve and retranslate these methods through my own designs.

How have your bags impacted this community?
Our factory has grown almost double since we started with them. We have enabled them to buy new, better machines, have better access to higher quality materials, and help preserve ancient techniques that would otherwise be lost.

Do you think you are giving back by producing there?
Yes.
