Ana Maria Plata - Leonor

Finalist of the The Patron Spirits Most Socially Responsible Handbag

2010 Finalist Ana Maria Plata Leonor

What country are your bags manufactured?

Please explain how your bags are socially responsible?
We buy the Mola fabrics directly from the Kuna Indians women that live in the Darien (an area between COlombia and Panama). We then take those fabrics and design the purses around them and have our handbags manufactured in different towns of Colombia, generating employment for the country and paying the Kuna Indians for their work. We want to show the world this unique pieces of art in a form that can be carried on an everyday basis.

Why did you choose this country to have your bags made and what made you decided to give back?
Because this is where I am from.

How have your bags impacted this community?
We have generated employment in the Indian community as well as in the different towns of Colombia where the bags are made

What is your design philosophy?
We want to show the world that there is so much more to Colombia than what you usually see on the news, show a unique piece of art combining the traditional handicrafts made by the Kunas and give them a fashionable and stylish spin.
